Tenacity and grit are the key qualities that Jason Hall thinks of when he thinks of his former team at Birmingham Southern College (BSC) in Alabama, which closed its doors permanently at the end of the school year.   

Hall, who was the general manager at BSC from 2017 until the closure, is proud of the team’s successful run, particularly its safety record. This spring the team celebrated 2,478 days (close to seven years) safe without any accidents or injuries. “We approach the safety aspect of our workplace with the “pay it forward” attitude,” he says, which encourages associates to take ownership of each other’s safety in the workplace with a daily discussion of what they did to identify and resolve any potential safety hazards during the morning or afternoon shifts. A regular safety Q&A during the 10@10 meeting can also include prizes, which keeps things fun and playfully competitive, says Hall.  

Hall also highlighted the BSC’s team’s exceptional teamwork, especially when faced with challenges such as the World Games, a global multi-sport event featuring close to 3,500 athletes from 99 countries competing in 34 sports. The event was held at several locations throughout the city, says Hall, including BSC, where the team served 3,500 meals a day out of a space where they usually serve 1,100. “We started planning for that event a year out,” says Hall. “The team did a remarkable job.”  

With the school’s impending closure in the news for many months leading up to the last day, it would have been easy for team members to check out, says Hall. “But we refocused our goals and energy toward just doing as well as we could to the end,” he says. “On the last day, the entire team showed up – I think it was the mentality of ‘we’re all in this together’ – we stayed motivated and did whatever it took.” 

Kudos to the leadership and team for a successful run at BSC – way to show up for your guests and each other all the way to the end!
