To help guests understand how to their food choices contribute to global
warming, we built an interactive Low Carbon Diet Calculator.
The Low Carbon Diet Calculator works according to a point system, similar in concept to Weight Watchers™. It is designed for eaters ranging from burgers-and-fries fans to farmers’ market aficionados. The point values are based on lifecycle assessment studies from published research gathered by two teams of science advisers. More than 40 peer-reviewed papers were studied.
For Low Carbon Diet Day 2013, we relaunched the calculator as an interactive website, Eat Low Carbon, offering a wealth of education resources as well as a photo quiz that asks diners to choose which sample meal offers the lowest total of CO2e emissions on their plates.
